Lisbon's Bike Train

  • Bicycles are not a popular means of transportation in Lisbon, whether due to its famous hills, lack of infrastructure or the absence of a cycling culture. However, an initiative is actively working to change this status quo.
Known as the Bike Train, it's a municipal program championed by the Lisbon City Council and developed by Bicicultura Cooperative, encouraging students to commute to school on bicycles, guided by "train drivers”.

“I thought
it was impossible
to go to school
by bike before.”

Beatriz Caetano,
Bike Train participant

Bicicultura

In 2022-2023,
240 children from 22 schools participated in the Bike Train.

Paulo Chakour

"We do the Bike Train once a week
because there is always an expectation from the child for that day to come and that makes that for the other days (...) they want to go to school by bike, so the children will encourage the parents to take them."

Sustainable Production

All the moving images in this video were shot using a cargo bike.

During the shooting, we optimized travel, minimizing the number of vehicles and trips required to the maximum extent.

In the process of selecting the 'protagonists,' the importance of promoting diversity (both in terms of gender and race) was emphasized.

No plastic bottles or other disposable materials were purchased during the production of this video.
